Pigeon Park Savings opened in 2004 as a joint initiative between Vancity and PHS Community Services Society, a long-standing organization serving residents in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The branch was established to provide people living on low incomes with access to essential financial services.
For a flat fee of $5 per month, members receive an account package that includes cheque cashing, unlimited withdrawals, bill payments, money orders, and ATM card access. In addition to serving members, Pigeon Park Savings also offers cheque-cashing services to non-members and a cashable term deposit featuring a higher interest rate.
Basic banking.
Access to basic financial services — such as a bank account or cheque cashing — is something many of us take for granted. But for some individuals, especially those with low incomes, these essential services remain out of reach. Too often, they must rely on cheque-cashing companies that charge steep fees just to access their own money.
While challenges remain, Vancity is actively working to break down these barriers and make everyday banking more accessible and affordable for everyone.
