Heather O'Hara

Opreet joined Vancity’s board in 2023. With over 25 years of professional and community experience, including senior leadership roles in large complex organizations, she brings strong governance and financial experience to the board. An engaged Vancity member for over 29 years, she has witnessed Vancity deliver meaningful and high-impact solutions for communities and its members.

Through various leadership roles, Opreet’s professional experience has focused on scaling innovative solutions that build capacity and impact in infrastructure development, equitable economies and improving health care access. She understands that the complex and intersectional issues of social justice, the climate emergency and creating an equitable economy must be addressed with values-driven, people-centric solutions that centre the well-being of communities. A common thread connecting Opreet’s leadership roles has been a values aligned, co-operative model approach that focuses on delivering comprehensive solutions that better the lives of people, the planet and economy.

Orpreet is passionate about transformative change that strengthens our communities, deepens a resilient economy and protects our environment. From a young age, her immigrant parents instilled in her the values of social justice and community. Building on that foundation, Opreet has rooted her progressive activism in supporting equitable participation, especially of underrepresented voices, as well as climate justice and community development. She has volunteered for various initiatives, as well as serving on the boards of the Broadbent Institute, The McCreary Centre Society, The Vancouver International Celebration Society (VIBC) and Diwali Celebration Society. For the past five years, she has sat on the board of the Fraser Health Authority, BC’s largest health authority, and served as its Vice-Chair throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences have deepened Opreet’s understanding of co-operative models as a blueprint in creating a world that is fair, environmentally sustainable and accessible for all.

Growing up in Burnaby, Opreet now lives with her partner and daughter in North Delta, located within the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish and Nlaka’pamux Nations. Opreet and her family can be found enjoying the forests, parks and recreational facilities in and around their community. They especially enjoy discovering local businesses and restaurants.
