Burnaby’s Dania Home Society rebuilds a magnificent refuge for seniors

About this story

Dania Home Society is a not-for-profit housing society that has been providing affordable housing for seniors at its campus of care since 1941. When the care home was in need of major renovations to meet increased care guidelines, the Society decided to build a state-of-the-art replacement. A Vancity grant and construction mortgage helped turn the dream of a new care facility into a reality.

The new Dania care home will offer 102 beds, funded through the Fraser Health Authority. The care home is being rebuilt with Vancity's support through a $10,000 grant, which helped with pre-construction financing and an appraisal. "This was a huge step," says Margaret Douglas-Mathews, Dania's executive director. "A certain amount was needed as a bridge while we secured the mortgage. The grant made it possible to do this. Replacing the care home creates a new building site and future opportunities to work with Vancity." The new beds will allow Dania to continue to make an impact for their residents and the surrounding community.
