Your credit card cheat sheet.

Credit limit

The maximum amount you can spend on your card. Once you’ve reached the limit, you need to pay it down before you can use it again.

Credit utilization

The percentage of your credit limit that you’re using. This is one of the most important factors in your credit score. The general advice is to use up to 30% of your limit in a billing cycle to show show lenders you’re using credit responsibly. If you need to use more than 30%, check out our Credit Cards 101 guide for tips.

Statement balance vs. current balance

The statement balance is what you owed at the end of your billing period. Pay this amount in full by the due date to avoid interest. Your current balance changes as you make new purchases, payments, or receive credits.

Grace period

The time you have to pay your statement balance in full without being charged interest. Missing this window means interest starts being added to your balance.

Interest rate (APR)

The cost of carrying a balance on your card. If you don’t pay your full balance, this determines how much extra you’ll owe in interest.
