Booking your driving knowledge test is an important first step toward getting your driver’s license. Scheduling your test early helps ensure you get a date and time that works for you, giving you plenty of time to prepare.

To apply for or renew your British Columbia driver’s license, you need to bring one primary and one secondary piece of identification. Your current driver’s license can be used as either your primary or secondary ID.

Acceptable forms of ID 

Please note:

  • Only original documents are accepted; photocopies must be certified as true copies.
  • If your legal name has changed and differs from the name on your ID, you must provide a marriage certificate or legal name change document.
  • If you were born in Canada but lack primary ID, reach out to the jurisdiction where you were born to obtain a copy of your birth certificate.

New to Canada?

  • If you’re new to BC and don’t have primary ID because you were born outside Canada, contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada at +1-888-242-2100. If you were born in Canada but lack primary ID, reach out to the jurisdiction where you were born to obtain a copy of your birth certificate.
  • If you have an overseas license, visit ICBC to learn about moving your license.
