Vancity recognized as one of Canada’s Top Employers
Employee and values-based banking business model proves to be great combo

Vancouver, British Columbia.  Vancity, Canada’s largest community based credit union has been named one of Canada’s top 50 employers by Aon Hewitt, a global HR consulting and outsourcing firm who has recognized Vancity in its list of the 50 Best Employers in Canada for 2013.

Aon Hewitt describes engagement as when employees “say, stay and strive” at work, or, when they speak positively about their employer to others, are committed to remaining with their current employer, and are motivated by their organizations’ leaders, managers, culture and values to go “above and beyond” to contribute to business success.

Earlier this month and for the eighth consecutive year, Vancity was also recognized as one of the country’s top 100 employers by Medicorp.

“We have engaged, motivated and diverse employees who are inspired to make a difference for our members and their communities through the work they do,” says Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO Vancity. “These awards validate our values-based business and employee model.”

Vancity has more than 2,400 employees serving 479,500 members throughout British Columbia. The credit union’s philosophy to serve long-term interests of its members and the communities has managed to attract and retain employees for decades. Sixty-one per cent of employees have been with the credit union for five to 10 years and through its annual employee engagement survey, 95% said they feel great about the organization’s corporate social responsibility approach. Over 82% were more than satisfied with their physical work environment and their coworkers.

Karen Whitehead, one of the longest serving employees at Vancity, came to work at the credit union directly from high school 39 years ago. “I stay here because of the organization’s values-based approach, which is instilled throughout the credit union. I really enjoy my colleagues and the environment in which we work,” she says.

Employee Belinda Neumann has been at Vancity for 27 years. “I’ve stayed because I was supported in expanding my knowledge and skill set, and in applying that expertise to several different positions within the organization. It has been incredibly beneficial for me to continue to grow into these new positions while remaining with this amazing organization.”
