Donating to the earthquake relief efforts in Nepal

When a major natural disaster strikes, many of us have a desire to contribute to the relief effort in some way.

The best way for you to help is to donate funds to an established humanitarian organization working in the area.  They can ensure your donation is used the best possible way and fills the greatest need. Also, Vancity Visa* cardholders can make a difference by donating as little as 2,000 points online at or by calling Vancity Visa at 604.877.4999 or 1.800.611.8472.

The following organizations are accepting financial donations to aid in relief efforts:

Canadian Red Cross

  • Donate online or 1-800-418-1111
  • Donate by cell phone:

*Note: all eligible donations made by May 25th towards relief efforts in Nepal will be matched by the Government of Canada.

The Humanitarian Coalition (Care/Oxfam/Save the Children)

The Humanitarian Coalition is accepting donations both online at:, and also by phone at 1-800-464-9154.

Doctors Without Borders / Medecins Sans Frontieres

Doctors Without Borders is sending medical and logistical staff to Nepal, as well as providing 3,000 medical kits.

Supporting co-operatives in times of need

Difficult events call on credit unions to come together in co-operative spirit to support and assist in immediate relief and re-building efforts. Vancity is donating $10,000 to each of two Nepal earthquake relief campaigns:

Co-operative Development Foundation

The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) is appealing to Canadian co-operators for donations to assist members of Nepal's co-operatives and credit unions affected by the devastating earthquake.

World Council of Credit Unions

The World Council of Credit Unions is communicating with Nepal’s credit union system, Nepal Federation of Savings & Credit Cooperative Unions (NEFSCUN) and the Association of Asian Confederation Credit Unions (ACCU) to activate a fundraising campaign that will bring much needed relief to the Nepalese Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs), otherwise known as credit unions, staff and members.

Visit their websites to learn how the campaigns will support disaster relief and help rehabilitation at a time of true need in this severely impacted country.
