...Why not innovation for solving social problems?
In January 2011, the B.C. government appointed the B.C. Social Innovation Council to answer that question. The council's final recommendations will be presented to Stephanie Cadieux, minister of social development, and Gordon Hogg, Canada's first parliamentary secretary for social entrepreneurship, today in Vancouver. Our recommendations are based on three assumptions.
One, social innovation and social entrepreneurship is in the DNA of British Columbians. The Great Bear Rainforest Agreement, the Four Pillars Drug Strategy, the Registered Disability Savings Plan, United We Can, Vancity's Resilient Capital Fund, Streetohome Society and Representation Agreements have made lives better in B.C. and inspired the world.
Two, it's not easy to introduce new solutions to social problems. It's human nature to hold on to our beliefs about what works even when we don't mean to. Social innovation requires rigour, measurement and strategic intent to ensure we don't slip back into "same old.' Three, unless we improve how we work together, our good ideas will remain marginal. That's why the council is co-chaired by a leader each from government, business and the community.
As difficult as it is to come up with a new way to solve problems, it is even harder to spread the benefits across the province or around the world. Scaling involves cooperation among a range of players - allies, and most importantly opponents and strangers. Two of our recommendations introduce new approaches to working together....
