Grand opening of the Victoria Public Market at the Hudson
On Saturday, September 14, 2013 the historic Hudson building on Douglas Street will open as The Victoria Public Market at the Hudson, southern Vancouver Island’s first permanent, indoor, public market in more than 50 years. It will feature a weekly farmers market as well as a Community Kitchen.
The market will become a local food hub for southern Vancouver Island and its producers, from farmers and fishers, to butchers, bakers, cheese-makers, preservers, brewers, vintners, florists and restaurants. It opens about 18,000 ft2 of indoor space for you to come and buy your groceries, and to meet, trade and share ideas with the people who produced them.
What’s more, it will help preserve the region’s food security, providing local residents with improved access to local suppliers, and educate visitors on food preparation and production. A Community Kitchen, located at the centre of the public market, will be a place where you can take part in tastings and cooking demonstrations, attend courses, lectures or seminars, and socialize with friends. Not-for-profits and local farmers will be able to use this space for product preparation, as well as sharing their knowledge on the production or preservation process, for example.
