Information about the SFU Public Square 2013 Community Summit

The summit is intended to get people talking about issues that affect British Columbians. It takes place Saturday September 28 to Friday October 4 and offers ways for Vancity members and the broader community to take part in the discussion. This year’s event explores the question: Charting BC's Economic Future: How can we create wealth, promote social equity, and protect our environment?

As a values-based credit union with a central vision of redefining wealth, Vancity works hard to redress inequality and to help contribute to the financial, social and environmental well-being of individuals, organizations and their communities. We do this through our impact lending, community investing, our Living Wage and commitment to democratic co-operative principles. We put members’ deposits directly into local businesses, organizations, and initiatives that create a positive impact on the neighbourhoods where they live and work.

With this in mind, we sponsored the summit’s keynote address by Robert Reich on Thursday October 3. His commitment to reducing inequality aligns with our own efforts in this area. The former member of three national U.S. administrations has written 14 books, has just finished a film, Inequality for All, released Friday September 27, about America’s widening income gap.

Vancity’s sponsorship of this event allowed the public to see him free of charge.

Vancity CEO Tamara Vrooman, together with SFU President Andrew Petter, welcomed and introduced Robert Reich. After his keynote, Anna Maria Tremonti, host of CBC Radio’s The Current, moderated a discussion.
