Joy of Feeding

On Sunday, June 30th, the UBC Farm will once again be hosting a unique international food tasting and fundraiser that celebrates the rich home cooking traditions of North America’s increasingly diverse cultures. Joy of Feeding features 16 home cooks from different ethnic backgrounds who will share their dishes, traditions and stories. This family-friendly event features children's activities, music and delicious food – all against the backdrop of the unique and beautiful landscape of the UBC Farm.

Event organizer Meeru Dhalwala of Vij’s Restaurant and Mary MacKay of Terra Breads wanted to take the concept of “breaking bread together” to another level. Says Meeru: “I wanted to hold this in a farm setting where sustainably farmed food is grown to make an emotional, triangular connection between whole foods, cultures and cooking. Unless we know what to do with local, unprocessed foods, we will never be able to support and appreciate local farming in any large scale, meaningful way… the actual term “Joy of Feeding” comes from the belief that, while cooking is work, it is important work. Joy doesn't necessarily have to come from the actual cooking, but it does come from feeding family and friends. The most affordable and healthy way to enjoy local and organic produce is to cook it at home. Feeding your family a home cooked, healthy meal and gathering in one place to eat together is the best way to nourish your loved ones bodies and emotional well being.” Proceeds from the event support the continued growth of the UBC Farm’s sustainability programming.

Vancity is proud to partner with Joy of Feeding again this year. Highlighting the community work we do in the local and organic food sectors – where we invest in businesses, nonprofits and sector initiatives that grow and promote a viable and sustainable local food sector – Vancity has supported a number of valuable initiatives led by the UBC Farm over the years, including a recent enviroFund grant for their ‘Growing Farmers: Feeding the City’ project. The goal of the project is to increase the diversity, quantity, and quality of sustainably-produced local food by training and supporting new farmers..

Our Vancity Member Perk 2-for-1 offer is sold out.

Tickets are available from Lower Mainland Choices Markets or at the Joy of Feeding website. See you on June 30!
