Climate-friendly retrofits for rental apartments.
We’re supporting rental apartment building owners in BC who are implementing energy-related retrofits with up to $10,000 per building in grants. Use these funds to reduce upfront costs and advance upgrades that will improve energy performance and reduce climate-related risk.
Eligible costs and upgrades may include:
- Replacing fossil fuel-based heating, hot water, ventilation, or cooling equipment with low-carbon, energy efficient systems
- Improving the building envelope or overall energy efficiency
- Strengthening resilience to extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and other climate impacts
- Electrical capacity upgrades that will allow for building electrification
- Updates that support lower emissions, energy efficiency, net-zero, or climate resilience
The grant can be combined with incentives, grants, financing, tax credits, and owner investment. It is intended to advance a retrofit project, or for an exploratory pilot, not cover its full cost.
Eligibility.
To apply, you and your building must meeting the following requirements.
Owner or business is a new or existing Vancity member in good standing
Have a Vancity mortgage on the building being improved
The building must be located in BC and at least 12 months old
The building must be a purpose-built market rental apartment with at least 5 units
Individual units of a condo that were bought and rented out are not eligible.
How to apply.
Gather your project information
Prepare the building issue or opportunity, the upgrade you’re considering, an approximate cost, the expected benefits, and the next step the grant would enable. You don’t need to have every detail finalized before applying.
Submit an application form online
Submit one application per building.
Discuss the project and provide supporting documents
We’ll contact you within 3 weeks to discuss the project and request relevant documents. A retrofit consultant may help prepare the application, provide documents, and participate in project discussions, but the building owner must apply or authorize the application.
We review your application
We will assess eligibility, project readiness, expected benefits, and available funding.
Receive a decision
Approved applicants will be asked to provide invoices and information about the completed project and its expected or observed benefits. Depending on the project, we may also ask you to share building energy information through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®.
