Vancouver Tap Dance Society gets a permanent home

Vancouver tap dance society

About this story

“Vancity was a tremendous source of real support, both financially and in presenting opportunities.” – Sas Selfjord Director and co-founder, Vancouver Tap Dance Society

The Vancouver Tap Dance Society has become a hub for artistic brilliance and a community space for dancers to come together to share their passion for tap. The 67-year-old studio went on the market in 2011, and the threat of losing the renowned dance centre became a terrible reality; the space offered everything the Society needed, and was a common ground for dancers as young as three years old to seniors in their seventies. Another suitable space for their operations was not available in the area, and not financially viable.

Through advice and guidance from Vancity, a long-term business plan was created with the goal of securing a mortgage to acquire ownership of the historic studio. Vancity was happy to provide the $650,000 mortgage, allowing the tap studio to have a permanent home and fund its future sustainability.

With the support of Vancity, the Society is continuing to give back to the community through spreading the culture of tap dance, and providing classes to under-privileged children.
