Richmond Food Security Society cultivates farmers and futures

Richmond Food Security Society

About this story

“Food affects all aspects of our lives including our economy, health, society and culture.” -- Colin Dring, executive director of Richmond Food Security Society

Global food demand is increasing while energy and food costs are rising, which means access to food is an imminent challenge for us all. Richmond Food Security Society was formed to help ensure Richmond has access to sustainable, fresh, organic food by training new and young farmers. Because BC is heavily reliant on imported foods and has few farmers, supporting visionaries like Richmond Food Security Society ensures the health of our local food system.

With grants and a loan from Vancity, which has been a major source of financial support, the society launched the Richmond Incubator Farm Program, in partnership with the City of Richmond and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Participants have access to the land, tools and training they need to learn to become successful farmers.

Ten new farmers are enrolled in the three-year Richmond Incubator Farm Program, which gives them access to a half-acre plot and training in everything from preparing the land to writing business plans. Through participation, they reduce their financial risk by sharing equipment and acreage, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University mentors each farmer. Furthermore, participants take away valuable community connections and are encouraged to continue engaging with the society.
