Tax scam alert

March 6, 2018 – Fraudsters posing as the Canada Revenue Agency are phoning people claiming that back taxes are owed. They are using a variety of threats, including a lien on assets and bank accounts, or an arrest warrant if the money is not paid. This is a scam. Visit the CRA website to learn more.

Equifax alert

December 14, 2017, UPDATE – Equifax Canada, one of two service providers for credit bureau reporting in Canada, has revised its estimate on the number of Canadians potentially impacted by a security breach of its servers earlier this year. More than 19,000 Canadians were potentially affected.

IRB and RCMP alert

December 13, 2017 – There is an ongoing telephone scam targeting refugee and immigrant communities. Callers are claiming to represent the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) or RCMP and demanding money.

If you receive a call of this nature, do not comply with any of the demands and instead contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you believe that you have fallen victim to fraud, call your local police as soon as possible.
