World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is celebrated annually to mark the struggle and achievements of people worldwide who leave their homes out of fear of persecution and seek protection in another land. Join us in the Promenade from 1:00PM - 1:30PM for the World Refugee Day Proclamation with City Councilor Tim Stevenson and other community speakers.

Presented in partnership with Multi-Agency Partnership (MAP), who works collaboratively to identify barriers and provide solutions to promote the protection and well-being of refugee claimants and service providers, by facilitating networking and information sharing between more than 40 governmental and non-governmental agencies.

A compelling, ground-level immersion into the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time, Sky & Ground accompanies the Nabi clan, a large, extended Syrian-Kurdish family, as they painstakingly make their way from their home in Aleppo, bombed out by the war, to the Idomeni refugee camp on the border of Greece and Macedonia. Their goal is Berlin, where they will reunite with family members and seek asylum but first they must make the arduous and dangerous journey through Serbia, Hungary and Austria.

As VIFF’s official Social and Environmental Impact Partner, Vancity will host a panel discussion after the film featuring filmmakers and/or Vancity community partners with important insights into the film’s subject.
