I’m looking forward to working harmoniously with other board members and the management team in an effort to continuously make Vancity a great credit union place to serve the members and communities.

For those of you who don’t know me, I have lived in Greater Vancouver for 29 years and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here were I worked, studied and graduated from CDI College of Business & Technology with Diploma in Computer Programming and Professional Business Skills Level I & II by Canadian designation.

Vancity board members must know how to plan and understand the budget, manage the organization finances, deal with members financial needs, discuss and carry out ideas, and listen to the membership. I believe my backgound in leadership management, financial expertise and 9 years working Director for Radu Security Services make me the best candidate for the job. I know what this job entails and believe I have the necessary experience to do it well. I am also very enthusiastic and give my all to every job that I am given. Juvarya Veltkamp

As someone with a young family navigating the high costs of daily life, I understand the value of banking services in today’s climate. We need an approach to finance that puts people first, rectifies historic wrongs, responds to the climate emergency, and promotes wellness and belonging.

I bring 17 years’ experience in leadership, governance, and finance, previously serving as Director at UBC, Chief of Strategy at InBC Investment, and currently as Senior Advisor at C40 Cities.

With the Global Competent Boards designation, I can navigate complex governance issues, and I advise organizations championing solutions for a brighter future, including Vancouver Maritime Centre for Climate, and Realize Capital’s impact fund.

As a Vancity Director, I will positively contribute to decision-making on behalf of members, ensuring Vancity embodies cherished values while safeguarding our shared financial interests.

It would be an honour to receive your trust, and your vote, to continue this journey.

What’s the candidate selection process?

We work to create a dynamic and well-rounded Board of Directors with diverse backgrounds and experience that reflect the communities we serve. The Board provides a list of Desired Director Attributes and Experience which outlines the type of candidate experience they’re looking for the upcoming year.

Every election season, we invite nominations from eligible members to fill available Board of Directors openings through our call for nominations. The Board is looking for candidates to fill 3 Director positions for a three-year term, starting May 8th, 2024.

Why are some candidates recommended by the Board?

The British Columbia Financial Services Authority (BCFSA), an agency of the Provincial Government which regulates credit unions in British Columbia, expects all credit unions to use a recommendation process for their Board of Directors Election as in the BCFSA Governance Guideline.

Each year the Board reviews the attributes and experience of the Directors who are not up for re-election. The Board determines what attributes and experience would be required to strengthen or complement the existing Board. This information is then provided to members in the Call for Nominations which goes out each November.

The Call for Nomination, posted in November 2023, noted the Board is seeking directors with the attributes and experience listed in the Desired Attributes and Experience document available on Vancity’s website, and with a particular focus for 2024 on directors who have:

  • relevant professional financial industry experience
  • senior leadership experience in a large, complex, values-driven organization
  • leadership in service of financial inclusion, social equity, labour relations or climate justice
  • technology strategy and/ or cybersecurity management or oversight expertise

The Nominations and Election Committee (NEC), which is made up of four non-Director and two Director members, reviews the information provided by the nominees and conducts an extensive interview with each nominee individually. Following the interviews, the NEC meets to assess the nominees against the attributes and experience the Board wishes to build on or strengthen, as communicated to members in the Call for Nomination.

The NEC committee can recommend up to five candidates, and as approved by the Board, best demonstrate the attributes and experience that will complement and strengthen the existing Board.

Although up to five candidates are recommended, each member is expected to vote for the candidate(s) the member feels will best meet the needs of Vancity.

Learn more about our Call for Nominations, download our Election Guidelines or the the Desired Attributes and Experience for Directors for more details about the recommendation process.
