Setting up pre-authorized payments

With so many bills to keep track of, it’s easy to forget a payment. Pre-authorized payments ensure your bills are paid on time, every time, whether you remember them or not, and you can also earn points1 (if you pay with your enviro™ Visa* card).

You can set up payments for things like gym memberships, Internet, or phone, or any other services where it’s recurring every month.

Getting started

Contact the store or service provider directly to set up pre-authorized payments from your Vancity bank account or enviro™ Visa* card. The vendor may ask for a blank voided cheque or request your transit number, financial institution number, and account number. The image below shows you where you can find these numbers on your cheque:

If you don't have a cheque book and don’t know your transit, institution, and account number, please visit your branch, call the Member Services Centre, or contact us by secure email from online banking.

You can also set up pre-authorized payments on your enviro™ Visa* card. Find more information and a helpful list of toll-free numbers for popular vendors here. Plus, you can take the worry out of paying your monthly enviro Visa bill on time by setting up automatic payments for your minimum payment or full balance each month.

Keep in mind that the time it takes for your pre-authorized payment to be processed will be different for each vendor. Generally, when setting up automated bill payments, we recommend that you allow at least 2 or 3 business days for the funds to reach the vendor. You should also ensure that you have sufficient funds in your account a day before the due date.

Helpful tips

For payments that vary month to month, such as your Visa bill, it’s a wise idea to set up a monthly pre-authorized payment that will cover your monthly minimum required payment. Look back over a few months of Visa statements to estimate your minimum payment, and set that amount as an automatic monthly payment.

You can also set a monthly reminder in your calendar 2 to 3 business days before the due date. That way, if you owe more than the monthly minimum, you can pay off the balance—or as much as you can--in good time.

1You will earn My Visa Rewards Plus points on recurring payments set up at Visa service providers classified in the Visa network as recurring payments. Recurring payments are defined as automatic payments made on a monthly basis billed by the merchant to your enviro Visa card. Recurring payments are typically telecommunication, insurance, membership, subscriptions etc. purchases. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, so please ask them if they offer recurring payments on Visa cards. Some merchants may sell these products/services or are separate merchants who are located on the premises of these merchants, but are classified by Visa in another manner, in which case this added benefit would not apply.
