How do you get kids interested in estuaries and watersheds? You bring their classroom outdoors! Edith Tobe knew that in order to get elementary school students in Squamish BC excited about waterways and ecosystems, she would need to develop a program that got their hands a little dirty and their feet a little wet.
The Squamish River Watershed Society created the Squamish Education and Outreach Project, a program designed to bring students into the field and show them firsthand what they are being taught in school. Activities include visiting mud flats, transplanting and restoring natural vegetation, and releasing salmon fry.
The Squamish Education and Outreach Project received a grant from the Legacy Fund at Squamish Savings, giving over 500 student the chance to explore their own backyard.
