Greg McDade

As an environmental and aboriginal law lawyer and social justice advocate, Greg McDade has worked to change our world by protecting and defending our environment, our communities and our rights. He returned to Vancity’s board of directors in 2012—having previously served three terms between 1996 to 2004—and was re-elected in 2015, focused on maintaining the progressive values of our credit union so we can do more for our members and communities.

Greg is a passionate defender of Vancity’s vision and model. He is a strong believer in the co-operative model and believes that member well-being and community building are as important as making profit. He co-authored the discussion paper, Credit Unions: Governance in Challenging Times for Vancity and Mt. Lehman Credit Union. He currently uses his financial skills as a member of the Audit Committee and on the Board of Vancity Community Investment Bank.

Greg’s day job focuses on providing legal counsel and business advice to First Nations on environment, economic development and strategic major project negotiations. He’s a founding executive director of Sierra Legal (now Ecojustice) and served as general counsel doing groundbreaking environmental cases. His most recent environmental projects include fighting fish farms with Alexandra Morton and defending the City of Burnaby from the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion. He is managing partner and a senior litigator at North Vancouver’s Ratcliff and Co., and has First Nation communities as clients throughout BC, the Yukon and Ontario’s North.

Greg studied law at the University of British Columbia and has been a member of the Law Society of BC since 1979. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (BC) in 1996. Greg regularly speaks on Aboriginal and administrative law for continuing legal education organizations. He’s a honourary board member for both West Coast Environmental Law Association and Ecojustice Canada.

Greg has been a Vancity member for more than 20 years, and calls the North Shore home. He is married with two boys. He has his accounts at Vancity, his mortgage, his kids RESPs, his own RRSP, his two company accounts and his law firm's main business accounts at the Lynn Creek and North Vancouver community branches.
