Media Democracy Days

Hosted by SFU’s School of Communication, OpenMedia.ca, and the Vancouver Public Library (Central Library), Vancity believes in the importance of democratic media and is honoured to sponsor this free, participatory event.

Launched in 2001, Media Democracy Days (MDD) is western Canada’s signature event for the growing global media democratization movement.  This movement seeks to create a more participatory media system by supporting independent and public service media production, celebrating innovation and creating dialogue around the politics and biases linked to our increasingly corporate and concentrated media. This year, MDD events will take place on November 8th and 9th across two venues: The Vancouver Public Library Central Library and The Cinematheque.

MDD encourages media makers, students, activists, scholars, and interested members of the public to:

  •  Know the Media by engaging in critical, progressive, cross-cultural and intergenerational media education.
  •  Be the Media by working directly with local media makers to produce messages that intervene in cultural and political life.
  •  Change the Media. by collaborating with community members to create progressive coalitions and actionable policy goals to reshape the institutional context of communication
