Resume tips
Once you've found a job that interests you, you'll need to submit a resume as part of your application.
We may review hundreds of resumes, so it's important yours is concise, relevant, and designed to present you at your best.
At a minimum, your resume should include:
- Contact information
- A personal statement about your employment goals
- Up-to-date work permits or visas
- Your work experience in chronological format, starting with your most recent role
- An explanation of any gaps in your career history
- Dates of employment, names of employers, and your job title for each role
- A brief description of relevant accomplishments and responsibilities for each role
- A clear, concise description of your skills, qualifications, and experience
- An overview of your education, including certification, degrees, and relevant courses
- A list of any relevant computer skills, foreign language skills, and other recent training
- A summary of any volunteer work, hobbies, or interests, and the skills they've taught you
- A note to let us know that references are available upon request
In addition, please keep these recommendations in mind:
- When we review your resume, we'll be looking for an individual who's a good fit for the position and for our organization as a whole. Make sure your resume demonstrates that you're ready to support Vancity's organizational goals today and for the future.
- Tailor the information to reflect the requirements of the role you're applying for. Either demonstrate the relevance of your experience and qualifications or leave that information out. If possible, your resume should be no more than two pages long.
- Be clear, concise, and truthful. Avoid misleading or vague information. During the interview process, you can expect to be questioned closely about the information you supplied.
- Use basic fonts and clear, logical layouts. Fancy fonts and designs can distract focus from the substance of your resume.
- Always proofread your resume to eliminate any grammatical errors, typos, and spelling mistakes. If possible, ask a trusted friend to review the document with a fresh pair of eyes.
Cover-letter tips
When you apply for a job at Vancity, you are required to include a cover letter tailored to the specific job you're applying for.
At a minimum, your cover letter should:
- Be short and stay on point
- Highlight your most relevant professional accomplishments
- Clearly show how you can help the manager meet their stated goals
- Demonstrate your understanding of the Vancity and its workplace culture
