Call to Artists: Newton community branch (branch 27)

We’re renovating the Newton community branch to better reflect the way we do business. Included, is an art call designed to engage the local art community. Through this art call, Vancity will select one artist or artist team to create one art commission that reflects the Newton community and Vancity’s vision and values. The art selection committee comprises a cross-functional team from Vancity, as well as two Vancity members. The call for artist applications will stay open for online submissions until 11:59 am on Thursday, March 22, 2018. Please review the timelines and guidelines for submissions before applying.

Vancity is now accepting applications of expressions of interest (EOI) from artists or artist teams who live or work in Squamish Valley, Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. About the art commission

The concierge art wall
An art commission by one artist or artist team
Budget: $7000.00
Materials budget: maximum of $2000.00

We’re seeking applications that reflect and interpret, in a celebratory way, the rich and diverse culture of Surrey and what the Newton community cares about. Content and themes can be historical, economic, environmental, or a combination and must align with Vancity’s vision and values.

The approximate wall area available for the commissioned artwork is 9’10” (w) x 9’-0” (h). Please view the provided elevation drawings for the art wall. The artwork or art installation will be located directly behind the concierge desks (staff work stations). The artwork can be multi-dimensional with a maximum depth of 4” behind the concierge desks. The Vancity logo, created in red, translucent eco-resin, will be mounted or hung and centered approximately 1 ½” in front of the artwork’s surface. The Vancity logo will be approximately 30” (w) x 22 1/2” (h). The artwork or art installation on the art wall will be partially visible through the logo, representing the co-operative and symbiotic relationship between Vancity and the community.

Specifications for the art commission: dimensions and art surfaces

The commissioned artwork can either fill the entire available surface of the art wall, or utilize a portion of it. Keep in mind that the Vancity logo will be placed in front of and visually integrated with the artwork. If applicable, Vancity can provide the selected artist or artist team with custom-built art surfaces for their artwork as well as a separate materials budget up to $2000.00 for creating the artwork.

Art media/material requirements

Proposed art media and materials must be low VOC with no off-gassing materials detected by the installation date. Preference will be given to applications that aim to incorporate up-cycled, recycled, sustainably sourced, salvaged, found and/or other natural media. Commissioned artwork and installations must be permanent, requiring no upkeep. Proposed commissions can be multi-dimensional with a maximum of 4” of depth behind the concierge desks. The selected artist or artist team must create their commission off-site.

Requirements for application

Eligibility

Visual artists or artist teams working in any visual arts discipline/media currently working or living in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley are eligible. Applying artists must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status and be professional or emerging artists in the visual arts. Vancity generally defines ‘visual artists’ in accordance with guidelines produced by the Canada Council for the Arts.

The selected artists or artist teams must be available for ongoing communication with Vancity’s art facilitator by telephone, email and in person for scheduled studio visits and meetings for the duration of the project. The selected artist or artist team will be expected to be proficient in all professional aspects relative to their creative work, including: working under contract, working within schedules, meeting deadlines, providing complete and accurate documentation, budgeting, expense tracking and invoicing related to their work.

How to apply for the Abbotsford community branch art call

Artists and artist teams can apply once for the Newton community branch art call. Applications are accepted via the web site: calltoartists.ca. All interested artists are required to register on this site. After registering, each artist:

  • can RSVP for an artist information session
  • receives a personal email with a unique Application ID Number and a secure, online folder for uploading files that support their application (concept image and images of past works)
  • can apply to the art call using the calltoartists.ca online application form
    Please note that submitting an application is not mandatory after registering at calltoartists.ca.

It is strongly recommended that after registering at calltoartists.ca, interested artists attend the artist information session before submitting their applications.


Artist Information session

Vancity will host one artist information session at the Newton community branch location (27) at 7555 King George Boulevard, Surrey, BC, V3V 5A8 (Google Map) on:

Wednesday, February 7, 2018, from 7 - 8 pm

This session will provide an opportunity for interested artists and artist teams to learn about the Newton community branch. Artists will also discover more about the community and the proposed art commission for the branch. Light refreshments will be provided.

Submission deadlines
  • 11:59 am on Thursday, March 22, 2018 - the deadline for digital applications via calltoartists.ca
  • Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - the Vancity art selection committee will review applications. All shortlisted artists or artist teams will be notified via email or telephone. The shortlisted artists will be required to submit supplemental documents and present their proposals to the art selection committee on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. The selected artist or artist team for the Newton community branch will be announced at the end of May 2018 on vancity.com/calltoartists.
  • The commissioned artwork must be completed by Friday, August 24, 2018.
